How To Choose The Right Stove

Looks

First of all you're going to need the stove to fit in with the look and feel of your home. Looks-wise stoves come in two flavours, contemporary and traditional.

Modern Stove Picture The Firepod, an example of a contemporary style stove.
Traditional Stove Picture The Morso Squirrel , an example of a traditional style stove.

Some manufacturers offer just one type or the other, some do both, browse our suppliers to see which you like the look of. There are plenty to choose from. Check out What Stove where (quote) "stove owners give an honest assessment of their own stoves".

Size Matters

Domestic heating appliances are given a power output rating in kilowatts by manufacturers. The smaller the room you need to heat the smaller the kWh you'll need from your stove. You can always buy a stove with a higher rating than you need but you might need to open doors and windows when the stove gets going!

We would recommed around a 5kW stove for a small living room moving to around an 8kW for an average sized living room. Large rooms will require 10kW and over. If you are not sure just give us a call or email us for advice.

Here's a simple way to calculate your stove size requirements

1. Measure your room
2. Multiply height x width x depth (in metres) then divide this by 14.
(Convert feet into metres by dividing by 3.3)

This will give you an approximate average heating value required for the room in kilowatts, assuming the room tempeature is 20 degrees with an outside temperature of 0 degrees.

As this is only a rough guide it can change with the number of doors and windows in the room and other factors. Such as stairs leading off to other rooms. Other factors include how well insulated your home is. The kW requirement lowers th better insulation you have.

Wood Burner or Multifuel?

There are two main types fuel that you can use inside your stove. The first is wood, the second is smokeless fuel. You can use wood in your stove if you are not in a smokeless zone or if you are in a smokeless zone but your stove has been passed as a smokeless appliance. Most manufacturers have a least one product in their range that is certified as smokeless. The second type of fuel is smokeless fuel. These can be burned in smokeless zones by multifuel stoves.0 These stoves can burn both wood and smokeless fuel.

Is My House Suitable?

Most probably, yes! Whether your house has an existing chimney or not, a woodburning stove will sit quite happily in your house lighting up the cold winters evening with a warm natural glow.

Where a chimney is present you'd need to ensure it is working correctly (we can do a smoke test to ensure this is the case). If it is then great, let's crack on, if not we will need to fit a liner, no problems.

If you do not have a chimney then we can make one for you, this usually involves using flue pipe and connecting to an outside wall or the roof, depending, and finishing off with a stainless steel twin-wall flue.

Fear not, The Stoveman can supply and fit to the highest standards, giving precise costings beforehand.
